A new competition has been launched asking artists and the general public to respond to some the UK’s finest historic estates through visual art.

Historic Houses, the UK’s largest body representing independently owned historic houses and gardens, has announced the launch of a new competition this summer, inviting submissions of artworks inspired by historic estates. From Thomas Sandy’s 18th Century prints of Harewood House to Ai Weiwei’s Gilded Cage at Blenheim Palace, artists have been inspired to respond to Britain’s extraordinary heritage for centuries. And now the organisation representing 1,500 of Britain’s historic estates is asking the public to get inspired too.

Through either painting, printmaking, photography or drawing, entrants are being asked to respond to these ancient houses and gardens in a two dimensional medium and in a way that best expresses their interest and fascination with their chosen subject. Entries may simply be straight depictions of their chosen subject or respond more poetically to a lesser seen or known part of the house, such as a character from the house’s past, or an object that excites childhood memories

Eligibility: The competition is open to anyone, including Historic Houses members, and to people of all age groups and locations.

What you get: The winner of the Historic Houses Summer Competition will be given an overnight stay for two at The Rag, one of London’s leading members clubs, as well as vouchers for Historic Houses tours and for the purchase of art and crafts books with Search Press. The Rag Club offer includes a champagne reception, a three-course dinner, a continental breakfast, and special guided tour of London with lunch at The Ribbons Bar & Terrace.
