The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites artists to submit proposals for SculptFest21, September 4 – October 17. The theme for this year’s outdoor exhibition is artifact, guest curated by Brooklyn sculptor Steve Shaheen.

ar·ti·fact /ˈärdəfakt/ 1. an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.

From Latin arte ‘by or using art’ + factum ‘something made’ (neuter past participle of facere ‘make’).

The year is 3021.  Humans are still around, but civilizations have risen and fallen, languages have morphed beyond recognition, and with them norms and ways of thinking.  If we could teleport there, it would be as disorienting as for someone transported to our time from the year 1021.

Walking through the woods of what is currently West Rutland, Vermont, a thousand years from now, a person encounters an object that was clearly fashioned by another human being.  That human is you.  What does it say, this artifact reaching across an almost incomprehensible gulf of time and language and culture?  What would you want to telegraph about what it meant to be a human, here and now?

Artists responding to this call are encouraged to consider the art object not only as a snapshot of individual expression, or statement about a specific issue of our times, but as something rooted more broadly and essentially in the human experience.  What marker will you leave for this future passerby?

Applicants are encouraged to think across and between creative disciplines and media, and to pursue metaphors connecting small-scale changes with social, historical, natural and geologic change, and of course, the CSSC and its grounds.
