Sabine Maier (born in Austria) is a photo and media artist who works not only with, but also on the media, on the many dimensions of the media.
In her works, she navigates in a form-safe manner between media and sensory realities, always circling a narrative nucleus that alternates between memory and discovery. Her artistic vocabulary extends – starting from the visual arts – to audivision and installation. The choice of the “right” media is a carefully planned dialogue with the situation that the respective exhibition environment provides.
In 1999 she founded the MACHFELD art label with Michael Mastrototaro as a working platform for interdisciplinary projects. Many of her artistic works were created under this pseudonym. As a seismographer from the social to the personal and vice versa, she dissects the essences of her stories until they are brought into a touching aesthetic language.
Numerous of international guest professorships (University of Witwatersrand / Johannesburg, University of California / Santa Barbara, California State University / Los Angeles, Art University Garz /Austria), international exhibitions (Trans Cape African Biennale, Kunsthaus Graz, Witte De With / Rotterdam, Hammer Museum / Los Angeles, Whitechapel Art Gallery / London, Cor- nerhouse / Manchester, Leopoldmuseum / Vienna, Kunsthalle / Wien, Museum of modern Art
Salzburg/ Austria), as well as grands and awards testify to her outstanding work.

Sabine Maier was born and grew up in the Murau district of Styria / Austria. At the age of 15 she left home. In order to make money, she quit her study and began an apprenticeship as a drugstore and photographer, which she completed in 1989 with preference. Immediately afterwards she went to London, completed a language course in Cambridge, worked in antique shops as a restorer and lived in an artist community. In 1992 she had to return to Austria for bureaucratic reasons.
She got to know the life and demise of being an artist in Graz through Othmar Krenn, Wolfgang Bauer and Werner Schwab, was a member of a punk band and participated in many art events. In 1995 she went to Vienna and in 1997 she completed the master class for photography at the Higher Graphic Federal Teaching and Research Institute. During her training, she worked at night in a pharmacy and in a drug factory. Later she worked for ORF in the design department and as a freelance photographer for Ogilvi & Partner, the independent theaters in Cologne and the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien.
In 1999, together with Michael Mastrototaro, she founded the Machfeld art label, under whose pseudonym many of her works are presented. Since then she has been working internationally as an artist. She worked and taught on the basis of scholarships and artist-in-residence invitations in Guatemala, Mexico, Spain, Canada and for years in South Africa (Johannesburg).
Sabine Maier is a member of the GAV and FLUSS, Lower Austria Initiative for Photo and Media Art. Her works are in numerous private collections and in the “Artothek des Bundes”, Austria.

These photos were taken out of my Window in Vienna and while I roamed the former Eastern Bloc countries Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and Latvia. The fascination with Eastern European countries goes back to my child- hood. It started with pictures, names, books, television news – and the fact that these countries were so unreachable.
There are people in the world … I like to think, I can handle everything that goes beyond me. Beauty is possible everywhere.

This series is a manifestation of time in form of old photographic techniques, old photo paper, layers and the symbols shown. Transparent, partly blurred, delicately fused into one another, as a constant fluctua- tion between sharpness and blurring is realized in the hermetic image space. The many transparent shades of gray, which strive to capture shades in all their nuances, symbolize all colors and visual forms in the world.
Truth only appears in symbolic veils, but it is nevertheless itself that shows itself in it.
